Have Ahad & Sajal in Yeh Dil Mera lived up to its expectations?

Broadly speaking, that depends on which club you were/are in – the “OMG new Sahad show” club or “Oh lord, not another Sahad show” club. If you’re in the former, you tweet about Yeh Dil Mera day in day out and come up with multiple theories multiple times a day to explain Amaan’s behaviour and whether it deserves to be excused or not. Currently, this lot is ALMOST unified that Amaan is a douche, and Aina must be protected.

The latter club, however:

  1. Has not watched the entire show and it shows from their random pronouncements such as, “Copy of Turkish show. Ditto copy” and the most common one: “SEE the CEO’s pupils just dilated while looking at the poor, young internee. This show is definitely romanticising work place harassment. Uff HUM TV – a channel owned by women – is doing NOTHING to protect the rights of other women”.
  2. Is begrudgingly watching the show and calling it slow and chanting, “Where are Amaan’s scenes? We want him to give us a proper PowerPoint presentation on why he’s behaving the way he is behaving or else we’ll keep on acting like typical dulhay walas who won’t take a minute to take back their valuable baraat (viewership).”

According to me, Farhat Ishtiaq has managed to hook the audience, and yes, the show is moving at its own pace and everything’s a bit murky right now, but that’s how psychological thrillers are supposed to be. We, as viewers, need to understand each character’s psyche and then judge their actions accordingly.

It almost feels like being in a psychology class and treating Amaan, Aina, and Farooq as subjects, but that’s how it is as of now. If you enjoy it, welcome aboard. If not, good for you; you just saved quite a few of your brain cells.

Here’s what has been established in the show so far:

Aina is NO innocent internee waiting to be blown away by the hot & horny CEO

Aina has the hots for Amaan ever since she met, rather ogled at him during a university lecture. He was the guest speaker and she acted like a hormonal teenager. And that’s not it, she threw a hissy fit when she wasn’t accepted at Amaan’s firm for the internship.

Imagine not being able to work in your crush’s company? Lord, how can one even survive that?

Well, now she shows up at his office looking all sexy in her formal attire and blow-dried hair, and still we wish to blame the CEO for “harassing” the “poor young internee”? I am not victim blaming or suggesting that her clothes are inviting. Nothing of that sort. Her behaviour implies that the internee has absolutely zero issues with the CEO calling her to his room “baar baar”. In fact, that’s what she signed up for.

Remember when she complained to her friend, “Jab se join kiya hai unhen (Amaan the CEO) ko sirf do dafa dekha hai woh bhi door se.”

There you have it. Amaan has successfully charmed her. We, as viewers, can berate Amaan for being manipulative and using his charm on a naïve Aina, but that’s about it. She’s a goner and the flirtatious vibes are being thrown around with mutual consent.

Amaan is indeed charming

They established that in the third episode when he went for a special Thai dinner at Ghauri uncle’s place, which surprisingly had no sign of Mr and Mrs Ghauri. The Ghauris didn’t forget to let their daughter loose on Amaan though, and that’s where she, while falling all over him, said, “Inhone tou poori university ki larkion ko pagal kardiya hai.”

Little does she know, that Amaan indeed is making an enormous fool out of every single person he has met. And how is he doing that? Through his charm, and of course him owning multiple oil refineries is a huge plus.

Yeh Dil Mera – The Drama that’s losing out to Meray Paas Tum Ho, and why we should STILL watch it!

Nostalgia is a double-edged sword

We know Farhat Ishtiaq, like Karan Johar, is a huge fan of nostalgia. Similar to how Johar always has a song featuring Kajol in his directorial ventures, Ishtiaq has certain dialogues, which we have now come to expect from her shows; “Khaanay mein kya pasand hai”, “Mein aap ko waja bataney ki paband nahi hoon” are the two that instantly come to mind.

The most recent addition is, “Are you alright?” Asfandyar revealed his caring side to Zubia for the first time by asking this pretty straightforward question, and now Amaan asked Aina the very same question when she almost had a panic attack in the elevator. Again, showing the audience that Amaan isn’t an all-out evil man. He cares about Aina. He even has a chat about how she “looked upset” with his only family member – Sheroo the dog.

The placement of the dialogue was apt, but did it have the similar “Aww” effect as it did in YKS? Nope.

Using these parallels to bring back memories of Yakeen Ka Safar and Dr. Asfandyar and Zubia may seem like a great marketing tactic. But then that’s what it is – a marketing tactic. An honest viewer doesn’t appreciate that. Asfi and Zubi are iconic. They cannot be recreated. So don’t even try.

Make another iconic pair out of Amaan and Aina. We’re all for it.

Mir Farooq Zaman has many dirty little secrets

One being, that he likes to kill people for breakfast. You dared to dodge me in business? You must die. You dared to speak to my Noor-e-Jaan without my permission? You must semi-die.

But apart from asking Ali Buksh to kill or beat people up, he likes to fly off to Karachi for little “unwinding” sessions featuring his second wife, Sahira (Rabia Butt). We say it’s a secret, because nobody, except for Buksh boy knows about his seven year old marriage despite Sahira’s regular verbal reminders: “Mein aap ki biwi hoon Farooq”!

We get it. Please say something substantial in your next scene with husband Farooq.

Oh, and please note Sahira is extremely jealous of Aina, so she might end up helping Amaan in whatever revenge game he’s planning.

Even a shrewd guy like Farooq will fall for Amaan. How?

He has no raging hormones (or maybe he does since he’s secretly married and doesn’t get to meet his wife often) to skew his judgement, then how can a shrewd man like him, who is obsessively in love with his daughter, fall for Amaan’s fake charm? You’d expect a man like Farooq to run a thorough background check on his Noor-e-Jaan’s husband-to-be and conclude, “Oh, here is a passive-aggressive raging idiot looking for revenge via my daughter”.

But apparently, Amaan’s hotness – physical and financial – trumps all.

Before you attack me with, “But Amaan ain’t hot”. Listen Linda, he is hot for Aina, her university fellows, and even Farooq – despite his pretty straight sexual orientation – because THEY don’t know he’s manipulating them. We, the audience, know it, so for us his hotness is debatable.
