Since forever, Pakistani drama fans have been exposed to high intensity drama where the hero grabs hold of the heroine’s hand and walks her out of HIS house – the same one she called a home after she was married, the same one her parents expected her to live in till her last breath, the same one she woke up to every morning, tending to her husband, children and in-laws. And while many of us objected to this brutal onscreen dramatization of what happens in real life, in many households across the nation, by 2026, it was a visual we had normalized.

What made this work was because Ansa’s revelation was so horrifying, the sudden realization that she was made to live under the same roof as the person who was behind her fake video, the realization that Anas, her husband knew about it and let it slide, hoping she’d never know, the realization that everyone in the house had been aware of this truth except her – the aggrieved party and victim, validated her emotions to a point that we, the audience cheered her on 100%, waiting for this plot point to take over our screens – and we nodded our heads in silent applause – it was as it should have been.
If Anas’ error had not been so heinous, if Shayan’s scheming and subsequent actions had not been so evil, one might have questioned why a heroine had to throw her hero out of the house. Was it a revenge plot – all the Pakistani drama heroines who were ever shunned by their in-laws now deserved a day of reckoning, or, was it too performative, that Anas didn’t really deserve this but the creators sensationalized the plot line in order to spark more conversations, views and… viral traction? All’s fair in the hyper-competitive world of Pakistani dramas, anything works! But this was far from the truth, thankfully – Bas Tera Saath Ho got it right from beginning to end.
It is important to note, that the point of the scene was not to show all men that women can do it too, (turn men out of their home), but that Ansa, in the life she led, had a home she would not be evicted from if she chose to live alone, and in that moment, she represented millions of women who had not been fortunate enough to have that option.
Ansa’s actions seemed wholly justified, and if anything, one breathed a sigh of relief that she could ask Anas to leave and that even in her darkest moments, at least she wasn’t made homeless, like the rest of her Pakistani drama ancestors (heroines) – for want of a better word, who might be roaming the streets at night till their hero has a change of heart, or found a hapless family to go back to – no, scratch that please. Ansa had a home, her home. And this story didn’t just happen overnight, it’s what the creators and script had been preparing us for.
Bas Tera Saath Ho, penned by the late Saira Riza and directed by Qasim Ali Mureed, has been championing the rights of women by pushing the envelope one step further, delivering us a refreshing and brave conversation on the often messy discourse on women’s property rights in our society. Where Ansa’s father drew up a legal document in his lifetime, to ensure she inherits 50% of his property after he passes, Ansa’s husband too, presented her, (as Haq Meher) at the time of their Nikah, with ownership to his share of the family home he lived in. Both male members of the family acted in an exemplary manner, especially Ansa’s father, who had the foresight that her brother might not take care of his sister’s financial needs after he (her father) passes away.
Fast forward to the prsent: Ansa has now won the court case against her brother who still contested for his share of the property according to Shariah law, and Anas too, could not be coerced by his chacha (uncle) to hand over Ansa’s rights to the family home. Where Bas Tera Saath Ho showed us a glimpse of the real world in Ansa’s brother Arif, and Anas’s uncle Mursaleen who tried their best to usurp her rights, the two men – Anas and Ansa’s father showed us why it is important to protect the women of our family in our lifetime – ensuring financial security for them at a time when they (the male benefactors) might not be there to shelter them.
