Abuse, whether mental, physical, emotional, or verbal, deeply affects individuals by undermining their sense of self-worth and security. The impact of abuse can ripple through all aspects of a person’s life, complicating their ability to form healthy connections and maintain a positive self-image. In episode 6 of FUCHSIA For You, the discussion will focus on themes surrounding abuse, including gaslighting and more.

FUCHSIA For You Episode 6 Ft. Dr. Saba Zain On Gaslighting, Saviour Complex & More!

In 2024, conversations around sensitive issues like mental health, gender equality, and personal boundaries are more open and progressive than ever before. Girls today increasingly recognize the vital importance of education and self-dependency in shaping their futures and reclaiming their agency. However, despite this progress, the harsh reality of abuse continues to persist in society. Many individuals suffer in silence, which casts a shadow over the advancements we’ve made. This serves as a stark reminder that while we have come a long way, significant work remains to confront abuse directly and create a genuinely safe environment for everyone.

Joining us today for an insightful conversation in FUCHSIA For You is Dr. Saba Zain, an experienced Clinical Psychologist!

Dr. Saba Zain is a consultant clinical psychologist with 16 years of practice, having consulted on over 1,500 cases and accumulated more than 15,000 clinical hours. Dr. Saba addresses a wide range of issues, including anxiety, mood disorders, trauma, grief, relationship challenges, addiction, schizophrenia, personality disorders, identity crises, marital counseling, and personal shortcomings. Additionally, she collaborates with other professionals and organizations as needed and offers family mediation services.

Should A Girl Retaliate If She Is Slapped, Or Is Restraint The Better Option For Her Safety?

If I say it from the perspective of women’s protection, I am very clear that this should not happen. Because it escalates only after that.

Dr. Saba Zain

Dr. Saba Zain addressed the complex question of whether a girl should retaliate if slapped. She emphasized that the answer depends on individual perspectives, suggesting that while it may not be entirely wrong to respond, it is important to consider the implications of such actions, particularly from a woman’s protection standpoint. She highlighted that retaliating can escalate the situation, especially with individuals who have a history of violence. She pointed out that those in violent relationships often do not act out physically unless they feel supported by others.

In discussing the human instinct for revenge, she acknowledged that seeking internal satisfaction after being wronged is a natural reaction. However, she stressed that if someone feels the need to respond with physical harm, they should recognize the potential consequences of such actions. Ultimately, her perspective encourages a thoughtful consideration of personal safety and the broader impact of violent responses.

What Is Gaslighting?

Gaslighting is when the perpetrator who has done something wrong is making the victim feel like you misunderstood him.

Dr. Saba Zain

Dr. Saba Zain discussed the concept of gaslighting, noting that it is a term often misused. She explained that gaslighting occurs when a perpetrator, after doing something wrong, manipulates the victim into feeling misunderstood or confused about the situation. This dynamic involves the abuser shifting blame onto the victim, making them doubt their own perception of events.

To illustrate her point, Dr. Zain referenced a scene from Jafaa where, Hassan reacts angrily, causing Zara to fall. When Zara accuses him of pushing her, Hassan denies it, claiming it was an accident. He repeatedly questions her perception, which ultimately confuses her and leads her to return to his house, believing she was at fault. Dr. Zain emphasized that this manipulation is a classic example of gaslighting, highlighting how it can distort a victim’s reality and lead to self-doubt.

Understanding Saviour Complex!

The saviour complex is that the other partner, who is the non-affected partner, who doesn’t have a behavioral issue, that partner decides that ‘I have to fix this’ I am the one who will save it.

Dr. Saba Zain

Dr. Saba Zain explained the saviour complex as a situation where a partner, often unaffected by issues, feels compelled to “fix” or “save” the other partner who is experiencing difficulties. This inclination can stem from a desire to help but can become problematic when it leads to losing sight of one’s own needs. While standing by someone in need is commendable, the saviour complex can trap individuals in a cycle of trying to save others at the expense of their own well-being.

She emphasized the importance of self-preservation within this context. Those with a saviour complex must recognize when it’s time to step back and prioritize their own mental and emotional health. It’s essential to strike a balance between supporting a partner and maintaining personal boundaries to ensure that one does not become overwhelmed or enmeshed in the other person’s struggles.
