What Exactly Is The ‘Cicada’ COVID Variant Everyone Is Talking About?

For a virus that the world has been living with for years, COVID-19 still has a way of surprising us. Every now and then a new variant pops up, gets a nickname, and suddenly everyone is asking the same question: Do we need to worry again? The latest one making headlines is the “Cicada” COVID variant, scientifically known as BA.3.2.

What Exactly Is The ‘Cicada’ COVID Variant Everyone Is Talking About?
What Exactly Is The ‘Cicada’ COVID Variant Everyone Is Talking About?

But beyond the quick news alerts, there’s a lot more to understand about it – where it came from, how it behaves, and what warning signs people should actually pay attention to. Here’s what scientists know so far, what they’re still figuring out, and what it all might mean for the rest of us.

The Story Behind The Name “Cicada”

The nickname “Cicada” wasn’t chosen randomly. Cicadas are insects famous for spending years underground before suddenly emerging in large numbers. This COVID variant behaved in a surprisingly similar way.

The strain BA.3.2 was first detected in South Africa in November 2024, but after that it didn’t cause much attention for quite some time. Then, in late 2025, it started appearing more frequently in surveillance data and clinical samples in multiple countries. In other words, it seemed to “reappear” after a quiet period – hence the name.

Since then, the variant has been detected in more than 20 countries, and in some regions it has accounted for a significant portion of COVID infections.

But the story of Cicada isn’t just about where it appeared. What really caught scientists’ attention is what’s happening at the microscopic level.

Why Scientists Are Paying Close Attention

One of the most striking features of the Cicada variant is its large number of genetic mutations. Researchers say it carries around 70–75 mutations in its spike protein, the part of the virus that allows it to attach to and infect human cells.

That number is unusually high compared to many previous variants. And because vaccines and immune responses often target the spike protein, changes in this region can potentially make the virus harder for the immune system to recognize.

However, scientists emphasize something important:

So far, there’s no clear evidence that Cicada causes more severe illness than earlier variants. Most data still suggests the disease behaves similarly to other Omicron-related strains.

Still, the mutation pattern raises a few key questions:

– Could the virus spread more easily?

– Could it reinfect people who already had COVID?

– Could it partially evade immunity from vaccines or previous infections?

Right now, researchers are still working to answer those questions.

Where The Variant Has Spread So Far

Cicada has gradually appeared across several regions of the world. In some parts of Europe, it has already been linked to a noticeable percentage of cases. Meanwhile, surveillance systems – such as wastewater testing and traveler screening – have detected it in multiple countries and regions.

The key thing to understand is that many COVID variants circulate quietly before becoming widespread. Monitoring programs track these changes long before the public notices them.

That’s why organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO) and national health agencies have placed Cicada on lists of variants under monitoring -meaning it’s being watched closely, but it isn’t considered a major global threat at the moment.

Symptoms: What Does Cicada Infection Feel Like?

One of the more reassuring pieces of information about this variant is that its symptoms look very similar to earlier COVID strains.

People infected with the Cicada variant have commonly reported:

  • Occasionally digestive issues like nausea or diarrhea
  • Severe or persistent sore throat
  • Nasal congestion or runny nose
  • Dry cough
  • Fever and chills
  • Fatigue and body aches
  • Headache
  • Mild breathing discomfort in some cases

Doctors note that a notably painful sore throat has appeared more frequently in some reports, though this symptom alone doesn’t confirm the variant. Just like with previous COVID strains, symptoms can vary widely depending on the person’s age, immunity level, and underlying health conditions.

Warning Signs That Shouldn’t Be Ignored

Most cases linked to Cicada appear mild or moderate, but certain warning signs should always be taken seriously.

These include:

  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • Persistent chest pain or pressure
  • High fever that doesn’t improve
  • Confusion or unusual fatigue
  • Bluish lips or face (a sign of oxygen problems)

Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek medical care quickly. These warning signs are consistent with severe COVID-19 complications, regardless of the variant involved.

Who Might Be Most at Risk?

As with earlier waves of COVID-19, certain groups remain more vulnerable if they become infected.

These include:

  • Older adults
  • People with weakened immune systems
  • Pregnant individuals
  • People with chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, or lung disease

For these populations, even variants that appear “mild” at a population level can still lead to serious health outcomes.

Do Vaccines and Tests Still Work?

Another common question people ask when a new variant appears is: Will vaccines still protect us?

Early data suggests that while the Cicada variant’s mutations may allow some immune escape, vaccines still appear to provide meaningful protection against severe illness and hospitalization.

Similarly, rapid COVID tests should still detect the virus, because they target parts of the virus that change less frequently.

In short, the tools used during previous COVID waves – vaccines, testing, and antiviral treatments – are still expected to work.

Right now, the Cicada variant is best described as a watch-and-wait situation. Viruses naturally evolve, and COVID-19 has produced dozens of variants over the past few years. Most of them appear, circulate briefly, and fade away without dramatically changing the course of the pandemic. The Cicada variant might follow the same path – or it might become more significant. For now, researchers simply don’t have enough data to know.
